How Usable is Your Website on Mobile?

In what’s shaping up to be one of the biggest changes to date, Google’s algorithm update starting in May will focus on page experience. Historically, Google has ranked all Websites on their desktop user-experience. But starting in May, they will be ranking all Websites based on their Mobile performance. In other words, how usable your Website is on a mobile device. To rank this, Google relies on two factors:

1. Page Speed: This is determined by how quickly your Website loads. Google recommends 3 seconds max. Mobile is always slower than desktop.

2. Cumulative Layout Shift: This is a metric used to define how visually stable a page is. Layout shifts are caused by different resources on a page being loaded asynchronously thus pushing/shifting the content to a slightly different location on a page. Put simply – when you’re viewing a Website across different devices, whether it’s a desktop or mobile, the page will load slightly differently to fit within the devices’ dimensions.

Because of this significant ranking change, there will most likely be reductions in organic rank for those Websites that have not created a good user experience on mobile devices.
